Bri Cain

My name is Bri Cain and I am a proud Chicago native, South-Side born and raised. I am passionate about working with individuals who desire to change the trajectory and narrative of their lives by helping them identify and replace what no longer serves them. I am committed to providing a safe space for my clients to feel comfortable being their full authentic selves by creating a therapeutic space that is non-judgmental, compassionate, and empowers clients to use their voice without fear of being shamed on their journey of self-discovery.

I am currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Art Therapy and Counseling (MAATC) at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In addition, I am a volunteer medical advocate, and a certified Rape Crisis Counselor in the state of Illinois.  I would describe my therapy style as eclectic. I work from a multifaceted approach that synthesizes multiple theoretical frameworks and techniques that accommodate the individual needs of each client. Areas of interest include: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy  (CBT), Lacan’s theory on speech and language, narrative therapy, holistic treatment models, feminist theory, social action, Expressive Therapies Continuum (ETC), and studio-based frameworks.

I feel as though I have a social responsibility to remain skeptical and continue working towards decolonizing the therapeutic space relationally while challenging existing power dynamics that have historically oppressed people of color. I am aware that in a macro sense, I may have very little effect on the larger social structures of society. However, my hope is that as an artist-therapist, I will be one who provides the space and sparks the conversations that could catalyze change.

In July 2018, I began therapy and the first question I asked my therapist was “how long is this going to take?” She laughed then and to this day, she still laughs when mentioning our first session. Over time, I realized that there is no set time on “how long this will take,” even though I still find myself asking this question. It is a daily commitment and therapy/healing may look differently each day. For some, this may be discouraging, but this is a lifelong journey with infinite rewards and one that you will not regret. I am more than happy to accompany you on your journey!

“A beautiful life does not just happen. It is built daily by prayer, humility, sacrifice and love. May that beautiful life be yours always.”
